Eyes of Wonder ~ August 20, 2007

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
Albert Einstein

Summer thunderstorms wringing the air clean from the latest heatwave afforded a lightshow that would rival any fireworks display. One very peculiar thing has happened over the course of the last few weeks. While I've never been deathly afraid of bees, I've avoided them like the plague and I've always swatted and shooed them away when they came too close. Sometimes, those pesky yellow jacket wasps gather around and really become a nuisance, especially when food or drink is involved. But lately, I've taken to just 'talking' to them, asking them to fly over there, or don't sting my babies. And then it happened...

I had one land on me. I didn't panic or swat it away. It just walked on my arm. And then another, and another, and another. Before I knew it, I had bees stopping by, landing, and then taking off. Then the yellowjackets did it. No stings. It renders in one's mind a movie title along the lines of the 'The Bee Whisperer' or something. I'm not sure what has changed to allow me to trust they won't sting me, and to allow them to land on me with no ill intent and to trust that I won't smash them on the spot. Whatever it is, it is miraculous.

Some other wonders I've been served this past week...

~ littles that are quickly learning to swim
~ baby grapes that taste like pure sugar
~ the sound of God's voice heard in the thunderstorms
~ smell of sandalwood oil
~ scrunchy nose smiles
~ the cool feel of cotton on hot skin
~ sounds of 2 1/2 year old saying in her best high-pitched, English accent, "Oh, Mummy!"
~ dips of honeysuckle to sweeten a parched hiker
~ percussion of raindrops on the awning
~ bees and hummingbirds dancing around the flowers
~ the smell of old books as I start to list them for sale
~ another beautifully sketched addition to Anne's refrigerator art gallery
~ deep smiles from my love, Michael, during his birthday meal

Care to list some of the wonders you've noticed? Some have written me and asked if they can use the graphic above. ABSOLUTELY! I'd be honored if you'd take some time each day to look at life through eyes of wonder...

Bees are very intelligent and you CAN talk to them! A promise to not intentially kill one and a reminder when you see them bothering you or loved ones. Yellow Jackets are the same.

Now, Sweat Bees!! That's another story! One of those is what sent me to the emergency room last year, sends me into panic mode when I see them and keeps me inside more than I should be (they are flying rampant here this past month). They don't seem to have any brains, I don't think. But I try to talk to them while trying not to panic. But I don't object when Norm kills them to keep them away from me!

As far as wonders ... besides little girls in apple trees, there are 3 baby chicks that "managed" to hatch out while the girls were here, there are mushrooms in my yard, flowers blooming again or for the first time because of our blessed rain. There is a bright, intellegent, witty, smart grand-daughter who is trying to right the evil wrongs of big business in this world.

Love you ............ Grandma

My Grandma...So you and I are kindred Bee Whisperers too? :-)

I remember you going to the hospital last year... and I have been stung terribly by bees and it usually results in a nasty hurtful boo boo or a throw up session because of the poison. The sweat bees are around here too... I'm going to write you a 'secret' oil I've been using to get rid of ALL buggies...ticks, chiggers, no see ums, fleas, mosquitos, etc... maybe it'll help with the sweat bees...

You must tell me about the mushrooms too... know what kind? And could I be that granddaughter? :-)

I miss you and love you more!

We had a bee problem only a few months ago- they were starting to build a hive in our back yard and we didn't want them to build a hive where they were building one, but yet, we didn't know how to get them to not build one! We didn't want to hurt them, for sure, so, my husband, who is allergic to bees, just starting talking to them... he asked them very politely if they would build their hive somewhere else... and they did! It was truly amazing... my husband has a gift.
There are so many wonders in my life right now- and one of them is being able to meet wonderful people who I might never have the chance to meet were it not for this thing called the internet!
Thanks, Carla Lynne, for all your wonderful-ness!

Great list. I'm grateful for a beautiful sunny autumn after a wet cold summer here in the UK. I went to pick apples this morning feeling the warm sun on my face and smelling woodsmoke in the air. Wondrous.
