Why Study Latin?

Why Study Latin?

1. To increase vocabulary and to deepen the understanding of the English language.

2. To help with English grammar, which Latin parallels. One can speak English without knowing grammar, however, one cannot speak Latin without first knowing grammar. Suffice it to say that studying Latin will help us learn grammar more thoroughly.

3. Latin grammar is essential to true mastery of language and thinking.

4. To help facilitate easier mastery of many other languages, many of which descended from the Latin language.

5. Latin is a culturally and intellectually enriching study. Its beauty and use make it a perfect subject around which to center our studies.

6. Latin spelling rules are thoroughly consistent, helping us to learn how to spell many difficult English words.

7. To be able to read many Great Books in their original tongue, breaking through the “middle man factor” and facilitating a primary source study of the great thinkers (which is a great argument for the study of Greek too!)

8. To increase logical and organized thinking.

9. To help understand medical, science, law, and many other terms used in everyday life.

10. To help increase SAT scores

11. To challenge oneself.

12. To appreciate the beauty of a language.

13. To help facilitate ones understanding of Western Civilization.
